The Difference Between Damascus and D2 Steel

Damascus and D2 are the two steels you'll see most often across our catalogue, and customers frequently ask which is 'better.' The honest answer is that they're suited to different jobs.

Damascus, as we forge it, is pattern-welded from multiple layers of high-carbon steel. It takes an extremely fine edge and is prized as much for its visual character as its performance — every blade carries a pattern unique to that billet and that smith.

D2 is a single, high-chromium tool steel, air-hardened rather than folded. It holds an edge exceptionally well under hard use and resists chipping better than most carbon steels, which is why we reach for it on pieces built for splitting, chopping or repeated heavy impact, like our camp axes.

Neither steel is objectively superior — a Damascus dagger and a D2 camp axe are simply built for different demands, and we choose the steel to match the piece, not the other way around.
